I love to be surprised and my recent hike to Canyon Overlook in Zion NP, in southern Utah, definitely did that. I had heard for years about this little hike and my expectations were surpassed. I was surprised by what a big punch this little hike provided with it's deep canyons with big horn sheep and a stunning view of Zion Canyon.
It's only 1 mile round trip, but starts off a little steep with stone steps, which is short lived since the elevation change is only 163 feet. There are long drop-offs, with railings in some of the more exposed areas, so caution is always advised with small children and be sure to wear sturdy shoes. Some of the rocks can be wet and slippery. This is a very popular trail, so if you're visiting during Summer and Spring, allow extra time for parking.
Directions from Springdale: Head east on Hwy 9 and pass through the Zion-Mt. Carmel Tunnel. Parking is immediately on the right after emerging from the tunnel. Over flow parking is further up the road on the left. Pit toilets are available at the first parking lot.
